Children are not born with self-esteem, resilience or emotional strength. These are skills that are introduced, developed and maintained throughout our lives. An easy way to think about it is comparable to sports, cooking or sewing. Some skills take years of imitating, practicing and mastering in order for one to become “good” at it. How long does it take to become proficient at gymnastics?
When we look at specific behaviours the same way, such as resilience, problem solving and cooperation, we can begin to see the challenge before young children to meet the very high expectations that we hold for them. We expect children to never hit, never fight and never bully. Is that expectation too much? ..Only if a child is not actively imitating, practicing and mastering the skills necessary to replace those “problem” behaviours.
